Gryphons are predatory avian anthrosaurs, armed with toothy beaks, sharp claws, and a large sickle-shaped claw on each foot. Primitive features include a long tail and four-fingered hand - although the latter may be an enhancement for tool use. They hold their bodies more upright than other primitive avians, but more horizontal than tailless anthrosaurs like Gremlins. Although Gryphons are flightless, their tails and arms have large "flight" feathers that may help them parachute when they fall. Male Gryphons have a large mane of feathers around the top of their necks.

Every Gryphon language has a spoken and silent side to it. The silent side is the hunting part of the language, which almost never uses vocal expression. The verbal, spoken sides of Gryphon languages typically is composed of low pitched, birds-of-prey like sounds.
