![]() ArchosaursAll anthrosaurs belong to the group called Archosaurs ("ruling reptiles".) Archosaurs are lizard-like, but can walk with their legs under their bodies. Crocodiles can also crawl with their legs out to the side, but this is a special modification. Archosaurs also have better hearing than other reptiles, so they can communicate with sound. Basilisks have a dinosaur-like body shape (long legs, counter-balancing tail, s-curved neck), so they might be theropods or some other kind of dinosaur, but they might not be dinosaurs because they don't have the hairy insulation found on many small dinosaurs. Harpies have hair similar to the insulation found on small dinosaurs and pterosaurs, but they have a body shape totally unlike any dinosaur, so if they are part of that family they are a distant cousin of the other dinosaurs. I made them red because of their hair. CrocodiliansDraconians should hold their bodies horizontally and have small arms, unlike some early drawings which were too human-like. Gargoyles are going to be more serpentine - like chinese dragons - than the way they have been drawn in the past. This makes them less humanoid and an interesting contrast to the stocky draconian. PterosaursPterosaurs are flying archosaurs with leathery wings and a fur-like body covering. They probably have a "warm-blooded" metabolism more like birds than other reptiles. Trolls are unusual flightless pterosaurs. Vampires are also pterosaurs. TheropodsTheropods include all of the carnivorous Dinosaurs. The smaller dinosaurs often have hair-like insulation (like the down that covers baby birds.) They probably have a "warm-blooded" metabolism more like birds than other reptiles. Kobolds are small and unusually human-like theropods. Large, bird-like Minotaurs represent the opposite extreme. ManiraptorsThese bird-like dinosaurs have feathers like birds. They are among the most agile and intelligent archosaurs, so it is no coincidence that they include several types of anthrosaurs. Cockatrices currently look silly. Based on the original drawing, I think they should be more like Therizinosaurs. They would have fat, round bodies - held at an angle like a bird instead of horizontally like other dinosaurs. They would have medium to long necks, medium to short tails, and three long, straight claws on each hand. The claws would interfere with tool-using, so we could justify modifications to the hand, like an extra thumb. Koalas have a second thumb - actually an extension of a wrist bone. I made Cockatrices green because if they are like therizinosaurs they might be omnivores or vegetarians. Gremlins are the most human-like maniraptors. They should have long legs and feet (2 toed feet) and wide hips, giving them a more egg-shaped body. Their arms should not be as long or thick as human arms. I made Gremlins black because they are completely bald, although baby gremlins might be born with some insulation. Hobgoblins are classic maniraptors - sickle-clawed predators. BirdsBirds are also among the most agile and intelligent archosaurs. Several anthrosaur races belong to this group which includes birds with teeth and claws as well as more modern varieties. Elves are one of the oldest Squawk races, and a good example of a body shape that is new, yet still archosaurian, practical and not human-like. Gryphons should have only 3 fingers. They are essentially a cross between velociraptors and birds. In the past we have sometimes justified multiplying races based only on the number of fingers. I don't think we need to maintain that tradition. Orcs could have a more egg-shaped body by broadening the hips. The feet could also be more like flippers, (doubling as snow-shoes.) Rocs are shaped like modern birds - particularly Bustards (the heaviest flying birds) Ornithschians and SauropodsOrnithschian and Sauropod dinosaurs are herbivores. Many of these dinosaurs are either small-brained, highly specialized, or quadrupeds, so we have deliberately developed fewer anthrosaurs in these groups. Manticores are Ceratopsians like Triceratops, but more like Protoceratops or Leptoceratops. They should have overlapping scales of armor - like solid feathers or fish scales - instead of a hairy or crocodile-like covering. Ogres are Sauropods like Brachiosaurus or Diplodocus, or closely related to that group. Unlike most sauropods, they move somewhat like gorillas, walking on their hind toes and front knuckles. Unlike gorillas, they have a long kneck and tail, and their spine arches up instead of sagging down. Titans are Ankylosaurs or at least related to the ankylosaurs and other armored dinosaurs (including stegosaurs.) Unicorns are Hadrosaurs |
